The Reconfigured Portrait

I create through a personal fascination with skin, flesh, and the anatomy of the human body. Combining photography, anatomical illustration, intuition, and mixed media as a vehicle for questioning, I juxtapose the role tradition has played in forming identity in portraiture painting. My interest lies in the manipulation of materials (such as paint, Latex, and installation foam) to construct an image that references the body beneath the surface of the skin. Yet my approach really provokes conversation about the mortality of our existence, while emphasizing the physical anatomy of painting itself. This approach to painting creates indirect tensions between the sensory qualities of the material, colors, and how it illuminates or captures light to appear alive and a little grotesque - rebuilding the form of the body through the structure of the canvas.

My paintings question how identity would be perceived without the color of skin or a face. I focus on using the conditions of internal organs of the body as a subject matter for addressing such identity inquiries in my work. The goal is to be authentic with my visual language of the body and enlighten my audience’s awareness of their own bodies. In doing so, my audience can sense the presence of identity through a virtual reality that will allow them to obtain a bodily experience of themselves as works of art.
